In December, an outbreak of pneumonia caused by a previously unknown type of coronavirus was recorded in the Chinese city of Wuhan. The first sick were visitors to the local seafood market, it was later found that the virus is transmitted from person to person. According to the latest data, today more than 250000 people have become infected all around the world.
Coronavirus is the causative agent of acute respiratory viral infection (coronavirus infection), which has a predominantly benign course. However, in isolated cases, a coronavirus infection can initiate a severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS, SARS).
Classical coronavirus most often initiates rhinitis and pharyngitis with moderate fever and intoxication. With the development of SARS, the formation of severe respiratory failure is noted.
Unlike classical coronavirus, SARS is always associated with a high risk of death.
In the structure of all acute respiratory viral infections, coronaviruses account for about 15%.
In the external environment, the coronavirus is not stable, it quickly collapses when heated and treated with disinfectants.
The source of infection is a sick person.
The route of infection is airborne.
The coronavirus strain that causes SARS is more susceptible to the adult population. The likelihood of a virus infection increases with prolonged stay in the same room with the patient, the patient has a pronounced symptom of rhinitis (sneezing, coughing).
Suspicious of the development of SARS is considered to be all infectious diseases of unknown etiology in the presence of the following symptoms:
- severe damage to the respiratory tract,
- fever over 38 degrees;
- cough, shortness of breath;
- data on contact with the SARS patient or travel to regions with fixed SARS outbreaks within ten days before the onset of the disease.
PREVENTION OF CORONAVIRUS INFECTION
There is no vaccine for coronavirus infection, it is under development.
- Isolation of infected patients
- Disinfection in the outbreak and vehicles,
- Use of personal protective equipment (masks, respirators).
Laboratory diagnosis of coronavirus infection is carried out in severe cases of acute respiratory viral infections and pneumonia.
